Learning games can be fun…if done right. Games like Midnight Rescue and Oregon Trail proved that, now a new math-based game is out on the iOS, does it make you forget you’re learning or would you rather sit in class?
Number Thunder is a very basic game, the premise is that it’s raining numbers and you’re given a total to–well–total. You’re given a whole bunch of different ways to total up the numbers. You can add, multiply, subtract and divide, there are other symbols that made my ear bleed because I have no idea what they are or when the should be used. I must also say I hate math (English major…thank you). The more you combine to make the total the more rain drops land, every time you make a total, the total will change, and thus the game continues until you lose. You lose when the rain drops collect and rise up to a nest, then, game over.
I must say it’s a very colorful game but the animations are so stiff, the only thing worth mentioning is the birds nest looks nice. The idea is interesting and there are different difficult modes (I stuck to easy then laughed on hard as I couldn’t think fast enough). Is the game bad? No, not at all, some math genius will absolutely love this game, for the rest of us it’s very basic. You’re also not being taught anything but rather it assumes you know what you’re doing. Chances are you’re just going to play like you play Black Jack and keep getting closer to the total and subtracting when you go over.
Still I’m surprised I’m saying to give it a shot, it’s not horrible nor is it boring, when you’re waiting for that one number to appear and doing your best to stop all the drops from hitting the floor your brain goes into overdrive. That is actually sort of fun since you’ll be surprised you know what you’re doing. It’s simple, to the point and anyone can play. So what I learned is that 2 multiply by 4 is 8, subtract that by 2 is 6. That’s the score people.
