Today’s Free App of the Day is a sequel to Sonic & All-Stars Racing cleverly called: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

Sonic & All-Stars Racing was a pretty decent title on the iOS, it played well and it looked and sounded good, now Sega has decided to make Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed free to play. If you already purchased the game you’re considered VIP, if not, then be prepared to sit through an unholy amount of video-ads.

Yes, the video ads can be quite annoying, especially because you can’t skip it, but if you don’t mind it you’ll find that Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is actually a huge step above the original title. You start off with the regular cast, Sonic, Tails, and Ulala from Space Channel 5 and eventually you’ll gain stars and rings to unlock other characters, like Ralph from Wreck-It Ralph.

The tracks and visuals are also a lot cleaner too, I thought the original looked great but apparently they can look better. The music will make you smile as a lot of the songs are remixes from older Sega classics along with tracks inspired from the games as well. Such as After Burner or Panzer Dragoon.

The one thing that kind of bugged me from the original was that controlling was a little rough. Yeah, tilting the iPhone is nothing new when it comes to racers over on the iOS platform but options would be nice. The original had some weird slider-thing that allowed you to push on the gas and decrease speed by sliding. This time it’s very simple. Left for steering and right for drifting (and items). It’s a huge improvement.

There are a lot of stages and characters to unlock and challenges to complete, if you decide to…ugh…add Facebook in it, you can compete with friends over leaderboards. I have not tried this as I’m not a fan of irritating my mom over on Facebook with my highscore in Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, but you’re more than welcome to (irritate your mom, not mine) . It’s a pretty good game that I knew would have eventually become free-to-play. Just be prepared to sit through annoying video-ads.
