This is Halloween, the time for all the horror movies and horror games to be played. Scary, horrible games to be devoured.  But looking at some of the titles I have to question, are they really scary or are they startling? There’s a big difference in the two. Are we really scared of them, or are we shocked by them? What makes a scary game?

There’s no disguising the fact this isn’t a horror series anymore. A series with horror elements in the same sense as Bioshock perhaps but not an actual horror series.

While the first two games were certainly criticized for the amount of bullets and weapons you had to mow down space zombies, there was often at least this attempt to have horror moments. Dead Space 3 doesn’t even bother with that and at the end of the day it’s closer to Borderlands in some respects than the previous games. But does that make it bad? Far from it.

Last year we looked at how love can be used as an attack, this year we are just looking at games that really are about love just in time for Valentines Day. Either the premise or the whole reason of the game. Unlike movies, games aren’t really subtle about love, it’s pretty much in your face, but there are some games that are all about saving the one you love or finding the one you love and it’s hard to remember that, without love there probably wouldn’t be a game.
